DESCRIPTION
Moon Valley in La Paz is one of those places that seems almost magical: a labyrinth of clay and sandstone formations sculpted by wind and rain, just minutes from the city. ITINERARY
Detailed Itinerary
- Pick-up / Meeting Point in La Paz
We’ll meet at a central location (or we can pick you up if you arrange it). Before leaving, take the simple precautions that work: water, sunscreen, and a light layer. In La Paz, the weather changes quickly, and the altitude makes you tire more easily, even though the trek is short.
- Transfer to the Valley of the Moon
We’ll head south. Along the way, you’ll notice how the city opens up and the landscape changes. Suddenly, the first eroded formations appear: that’s when you understand why it’s called a lunar landscape. The guide will explain how these structures were formed and why they are so fragile.
- Entrance + Short Orientation Talk
Once inside, the guide will explain the marked trails (there are circuits) and the basic rules: stay on the paths, don’t climb the clay towers, and respect the space. This place is preserved with respect because erosion creates it… and can also destroy it.
-
Main Trekking Circuit
The most beautiful part begins: a hike through natural corridors, past hardened mud “needles,” and walls with unusual textures.
What you’ll see in this section:
- Formations that resemble castles and slender columns.
- Narrow, canyon-like sections (super photogenic).
- Short climbs that offer different perspectives at every turn.
Real pacing tip: walk slowly, breathe through your nose, and talk little on the climbs. It’s not for drama; it’s for altitude.
- Viewpoints and Photo Break
We reach one or two viewpoints overlooking the Valley of the Moon. Here, the entire landscape comes into view: ridges, shadows, and reliefs as if it were another planet. A break for photos and hydration. If it’s sunny, it’s intense: sunscreen and a hat help a lot.
- Alternative Circuit (optional) + Landscape Interpretation
If the group is progressing well, a second, shorter circuit is offered. The guide usually explains how the rain and wind sculpt the valley, and why some towers collapse over time. This is the part that transforms the hike into an experience: you begin to see things with new eyes.
- Return to La Paz (1:00 PM – 1:45 PM)
We return to the city. If you want to complete the experience like a local, it’s perfect with lunch in the southern part of town or a relaxing coffee (because after the trek, your body will appreciate unwinding).

- Sunscreen is a must
The sun in La Paz is strong year-round. Bring sunscreen, a hat or cap, and sunglasses, even on cloudy days.
