Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace
The spiritual and historical heart of La Paz, Bolivia. The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace is much more than a religious temple: it is an architectural, cultural, and historical symbol that stands with elegance and solemnity in Plaza Murillo, the political and social epicenter of La Paz, the administrative capital of Bolivia.
📍 Location and Importance
Situated opposite the Government Palace and the Legislative Palace, this cathedral not only dominates the urban landscape of the main square but also embodies centuries of faith, cultural adaptation, and progress. Its presence serves as a reminder of the importance of the church in shaping the identity of La Paz and Bolivia.
🛠 A History That Endures
The history of the Metropolitan Cathedral dates back to the early 17th century. Construction of the first church began in 1606 and was completed in 1692, featuring three naves, two side chapels, two bell towers, and a dome, built of stone, lime, and brick.
However, due to serious structural problems (such as the sinking of the presbytery and numerous cracks), this first building was demolished in 1831 to make way for a new, more robust and monumental church.
On March 24, 1835, construction began on the current cathedral under the direction of Father Manuel Sanahuja, with the support of President Andrés de Santa Cruz. Although it was officially inaugurated in 1925, its ornamentation continued until 1932, and the side towers were only completed in 1989, coinciding with the visit of Pope John Paul II.
🏛 Architecture: A Legacy Between Classicism and Baroque
The cathedral stands out for its Neoclassical style with Baroque features, combining classical sobriety and symmetry with European-inspired ornamental details.
Key Architectural Elements:
- 📐 Monumental two-tiered façade with Corinthian columns that give it an imposing presence facing the plaza.
- 🕍 Five interior naves that embrace light, sacred art, and the spirit of worship.
- 💠 Metal domes crown the temple with a distinctive gleam under the Andean sun.

📜 Underground crypts, extending over two hectares beneath the building.
The interior houses a marble high altar brought from Italy, bronze inlays, and a collection of sacred art that reflects centuries of religious devotion.
🕯 Treasures and Sacred Spaces
One of the most moving areas of the cathedral is the chapel on the left side, where the remains of Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz, a central figure in Bolivian republican history, rest.
